You'll also need to add some padding so that the downward arrow can be added and removed without changing the width of the tabs.

Not sure how this'd look, but another idea is to try to merge the selected tab into the tab itself - so that the bottom border of the selected tab goes away, and the colours merge from the tab into the content...
